Star Princess Successfully Completes Sea Trials

August 27, 2025

The second Sphere-class ship from Princess Cruises, the Star Princess, has reached an important milestone with the successful completion of its sea trials. The new vessel is ready to welcome its first passengers on October 4, 2025, when it will begin its Mediterranean voyages from Barcelona.

During the final trials conducted between August 9-12, the Star Princess departed from the Fincantieri Shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, toward the Adriatic Sea. There it completed a comprehensive series of evaluations including steering, navigation, and propulsion systems. As the second ship in the Princess fleet powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), it represents a significant advancement in emissions reduction.

The vessel features innovative propulsion technology: two Azipod units that provide 360-degree thrust for both forward and backward movement, complemented by four large controllable pitch bow thrusters that allow precise lateral maneuvers.

Under the command of Captain Gennaro Arma, a veteran with 27 years of experience at Princess Cruises and leader of the Sphere-class newbuild team, the Star Princess now enters its final outfitting phase with a team of 1,600 crew members.

At 177,800 tons and with capacity for 4,300 passengers, this sister ship to the award-winning Sun Princess will offer 30 distinct dining and bar venues, elevated entertainment and activities, and luxurious accommodations including Sanctuary Collection suites. We invite you to read our impressions of the Sun Princess to learn what you’ll find on this second Sphere-class ship.

Among the most notable facilities are The Dome, an innovative relaxation and entertainment space; The Arena, Princess’ most technologically advanced theater; The Piazza, the architectural centerpiece of the ship with impressive curves and large windows; and Spellbound by Magic Castle®, a captivating speakeasy experience born from a collaboration with the famous Hollywood icon.
