Haines lies on a peninsula on the western shore of Lynn Canal, about 45 minutes by fast ferry from Skagway. It is a quieter port than its neighbours, visited mostly by small and medium-sized ships. Ships dock at the Port Chilkoot Dock, at the foot of Fort William H. Seward. The dock has a single berth for large ships, so when a second ship is in port, its passengers come ashore by tender at the float next to the pier. Fort Seward is about 600 m (650 yards) uphill from the dock, and the town centre, around Main Street, about 1.2 km (three quarters of a mile). On cruise days a shuttle bus links the dock with the town.
Fort William H. Seward, an army post built between 1902 and 1904, keeps its officers' houses around the former parade ground. In town, the Sheldon Museum covers the history of the Tlingit and of the Chilkat Valley, and the Hammer Museum is devoted to the history of the hammer. The American Bald Eagle Foundation has a natural history museum and live birds of prey. The Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, about 30 km (19 miles) north along the Chilkat River, has bald eagles all year, and up to 4,000 gather there in October and November, after the cruise season. Usual excursions include rafting on the Chilkat River, wildlife tours in the preserve and the fast ferry to Skagway.
