From the city docks you walk to Marine Park and South Franklin Street in under 10 minutes. Mendenhall Glacier is 20 km away by bus or tour.

Juneau, the capital of Alaska, has no road connection with the rest of the state or with Canada: it can only be reached by sea or by air. It is one of the most visited ports on Inside Passage cruises, and on summer days several ships are often in port at the same time. Cruise ships dock along the downtown waterfront on Gastineau Channel, within walking distance of the town centre, the shops on South Franklin Street, the Alaska State Capitol and the Alaska State Museum.

The Goldbelt Tram (formerly the Mount Roberts Tramway) starts next to the cruise docks and climbs 550 m (1,800 feet) to a viewpoint with trails and a nature centre. It was closed throughout the 2026 season after an accident in April. Mendenhall Glacier, about 20 km (12 miles) from downtown, is the most popular excursion: shuttle buses go to the visitor centre, from where a trail leads to Nugget Falls, next to the glacier. Whale-watching boats leave from Auke Bay, north of town, to look for humpback whales, and some tours combine them with a visit to the glacier. Other options include helicopter flights over the Juneau Icefield with a landing on a glacier, and salmon bakes in the forest outside town.
