Victoria (British Columbia)
Ships dock at Ogden Point, at the entrance to Victoria's harbour, about 2 km from the Parliament Buildings and the Inner Harbour.
A shuttle bus runs downtown for every ship. On foot, Dallas Road and the harbour path lead to the Inner Harbour in about 30 minutes.
Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, is on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. Many Alaska cruises from Seattle call here, often for an evening or a few hours, because United States law requires foreign-flagged ships on round trips from a US port to stop at a foreign port. Ships dock at Ogden Point, in the James Bay district, about 2 km (1.2 miles) from the Inner Harbour. The walk along the seafront takes around 25 minutes, and there are shuttle buses and taxis.
The Inner Harbour is the heart of the city: the British Columbia Parliament Buildings, outlined with thousands of lights at night, and the Fairmont Empress hotel, known for its afternoon tea, face the water. The Royal BC Museum, next to Parliament, covers the natural and human history of the province. Butchart Gardens, about 22 km (14 miles) north of the city, is the most popular excursion, with sunken, Japanese and Italian gardens laid out in a former limestone quarry. Other options include whale-watching boats from the Inner Harbour to look for orcas, Chinatown, the oldest in Canada, and Fisherman's Wharf, with floating homes and food stalls.
