MSC Group’s Cruise Division has marked a significant milestone with the official inauguration of its new terminal in Barcelona, coinciding with the maiden call of EXPLORA II, the latest addition to their luxury lifestyle brand, Explora Journeys.
The ceremony brought together key figures from both government and industry, including Spanish State Secretary Jose Antonio Santano Clavero, Central Government Delegate Carlos Prieto, and various local officials, alongside MSC Group’s Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago.
The terminal, designed by the renowned Catalonian architecture firm Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura, represents a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal. Its design philosophy emphasizes seamless continuity with the cruise experience, featuring an avant-garde approach that begins engaging passengers from the moment they arrive.
In his address, Pierfrancesco Vago highlighted Barcelona’s long-standing importance to MSC Group, noting their four-decade relationship and MSC Cruises’ 25-year presence in the city. He emphasized that the terminal investment aligns with Barcelona’s vision for sustainable tourism while contributing to the region’s economic growth.
The facility showcases impressive environmental credentials, having achieved Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Its sustainable features include solar panels, optimized natural lighting, and a rainwater collection system for toilets and landscaping. Furthermore, the terminal is future-proofed with shore-to-ship power connectivity, scheduled to be operational by 2027, which will allow docked vessels to connect to the local power grid and eliminate port emissions.
The terminal’s amenities cater to various passenger needs, featuring a retail area, spacious waiting lounge, and an exclusive VIP lounge for premium and luxury guests. The exterior design pays homage to Barcelona’s rich architectural heritage with Gaudi-inspired ceramic cladding in maritime hues.
This summer, MSC Cruises will operate five ships from Barcelona – MSC World Europa, MSC Seaview, MSC Seaside, MSC Magnifica, and MSC Orchestra – while the luxury vessel EXPLORA II will make regular calls throughout the season.
