Royal Caribbean Group has announced a significant expansion of its Celebrity Cruises fleet with the signing of an agreement with Chantiers de l’Atlantique for a sixth Edge Series ship. The new vessel, currently known as Edge 6 or “Xcel 2,” will be a sister ship to Celebrity Xcel and is scheduled for delivery in 2028.
The Edge Series has been instrumental in redefining premium travel at sea, combining innovative design with exceptional guest experiences. The new ship will incorporate the series’ signature features, including the iconic Magic Carpet® – the world’s first cantilevered, floating platform at sea – and Infinite Veranda® staterooms that blur the lines between ship and shore.
Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises, expressed enthusiasm about the announcement, noting that Celebrity Xcel will launch in November with seven new experiences developed through their Xcel Dream Makers program – an industry-first initiative that involves cruisers in decisions about culinary offerings, interior design, and entertainment.
“Celebrity Xcel will be the happy place of vacationers globally when she launches in November and we’re thrilled to be making this commitment to bring her a sister ship in Edge 6″ – Laura Hodges Bethge
Laurent Castaing, CEO of Chantiers de l’Atlantique, highlighted that the sixth Edge Series ship will showcase advanced technology, including methanol capabilities, representing a step forward in sustainable cruising.
“The strong ties between Chantiers de l’Atlantique and Royal Caribbean Group have led to the creation of the unique Edge Series design” – Laurent Castaing
This agreement is part of Royal Caribbean Group’s broader expansion strategy, with eight ships currently on order. The deal remains subject to customary conditions, including financing.
