Carnival Cruise Line has officially announced that its fifth Excel-class ship, the newly named Carnival Tropicale, will establish its homeport in Galveston, Texas, beginning in 2028. This strategic deployment will further consolidate the company’s operational footprint in the Gulf Coast region, bringing the total number of its latest generation vessels based in Galveston to two. By positioning another major vessel in this location, Carnival aims to support steady passenger volume and maintain its market share in the area.
The Carnival Tropicale is scheduled to operate alongside the Carnival Jubilee, a vessel that successfully initiated its service from the same Texas port in 2024. Both of these maritime structures feature an operational capacity of over 6,000 guests and share the distinctive Star of Texas emblem painted on their bows. The integration of continuous, year-round itineraries departing from the Port of Galveston reflects Carnival’s sustained focus on the Texas cruise sector. Utilizing high-capacity vessels allows the company to process a large passenger volume efficiently through its regional operations.
From a technical and environmental standpoint, the Carnival Tropicale will be propelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG). This engineering choice aligns with the broader maritime industry’s transition toward alternative fuels and adheres to the structural standards set by previous ships in the Excel class. The vessel also draws architectural and design inspiration from its upcoming sister ship, the Carnival Festivale, which remains on schedule for formal delivery in April 2027.
Regarding onboard amenities, the Carnival Tropicale will introduce several updated dining and entertainment venues. A primary addition to the ship’s deck plan is a newly developed recreational zone designated as Sunsation Point. This specific area will be anchored by the Carnival WaterWorks Ultra, which is described as a multi-level waterpark, and will be surrounded by various other facilities tailored for family recreation.
The nomenclature of the new ship intentionally honors the original 1982 MS Tropicale, a historic vessel often recognized by maritime historians for its role in shifting the industry’s focus toward onboard entertainment and destination-independent activities. Carnival management has indicated that specific booking availability, along with the precise deployment itineraries for the Carnival Tropicale, will be published in the latter half of the current year.
